The short answer

The 2026 Valve Steam Machine is a small game console that is really a PC underneath. It plugs into your TV and plays the games you already own on Steam. It costs $1,049 for the 512 GB version or $1,349 for the 2 TB version, and it is powerful enough for smooth, sharp gaming on a big screen.

What is the Steam Machine, in simple terms?

Think of the Steam Machine as a games console made by Valve, the company behind Steam. It sits under your TV like an Xbox or PlayStation, you turn it on, and you are playing in seconds.

The twist is what is inside. It is actually a small computer, so instead of a console only store, it plays the games you already bought on Steam. If you have built up a library on a PC or a Steam Deck, all of it shows up here, ready to play on the couch.

You do not need to know anything about computers to use it. It boots straight into a simple, controller friendly screen called SteamOS, the same easy software that runs on the Steam Deck.

What is inside it?

Here is the hardware in everyday language. You do not need to memorize any of this, but it helps to know what you are paying for.

  • Processor (the brain): a 6 core AMD chip that runs the game's logic
  • Graphics (draws the picture): an AMD graphics chip with its own 8 GB of memory
  • Memory: 16 GB of RAM, the short term space games use while running
  • Storage: your choice of 512 GB or 2 TB for installing games
  • Software: SteamOS, a simple console style system

In short, this is solid mid range gaming hardware in a box the size of a small console. Want the full breakdown with every detail explained? Read the full specs page.

Is it worth $1,049?

Honestly, it depends on how you play.

The Steam Machine costs about 60% more than a current Xbox or PlayStation console (roughly $1,049 vs about $650 in June 2026). What you get for that is your whole Steam library on the TV, big seasonal Steam sales, and the freedom of PC gaming, all without building or fiddling with a computer.

It is a great fit if you: already own a pile of Steam games, want to play them on the couch, and like the idea of a console that just works.

You might want something else if you: mainly play Xbox or PlayStation exclusives, or you simply want the cheapest way to start gaming.

Not sure yet? Our comparison guides put it side by side with the other options.

Who is it really for?

The couch gamer with a Steam account. You already buy games on Steam and you would love to play them on the big screen without dragging a desktop tower into the living room.

The Steam Deck owner who wants more. You enjoy the handheld but want sharper, smoother games on the TV at home.

The console player who is curious about PC gaming. You want something as simple as a console, but with access to Steam's huge store, sales, and mods.

How does it compare to other consoles and PCs?

We wrote a clear, no jargon guide for each popular alternative:

How do you actually buy one?

You cannot just add it to a cart at launch. Valve uses a sign up system, a bit like a virtual line. You reserve your spot on the Steam Store, and Valve invites people to buy in batches. Our buying guide walks you through every step and who is eligible.

Should you get one?

Great pick if you already buy games on Steam and want to play them on the TV without setting up a computer. Maybe skip it if you mostly play console only games, or you want the cheapest option possible.

How much does the Steam Machine cost?+
The 512 GB model is $1,049 and the 2 TB model is $1,349. If you add the Steam Controller, the bundles are $1,128 and $1,428. Tax is added on top at checkout.
When does the Steam Machine come out?+
Valve starts shipping it on June 29, 2026. You sign up for a spot in line on the Steam Store rather than just buying it off a shelf.
Is the Steam Machine more powerful than a Steam Deck?+
Yes, by a large margin. Valve says it is over 6 times more powerful overall, with a stronger processor and dedicated graphics memory, so games look better and run more smoothly than on the handheld.
Can it play all of my Steam games?+
It plays the large majority of Steam games. A small number with strict anti cheat may not work. If a game runs on the Steam Deck, it will almost always run here too.
